If you run into issues while using Simply Popups, check this guide for solutions to the most common problems.
General Issues
I Can’t Find the Trigger Settings
Problem: You are looking for the “Trigger Type” or “Close Button” settings in the sidebar, but they aren’t there.
Cause: You likely have the Simply Popups Button or Simply Popups Content block selected, rather than the Parent Block.
Solution:
- Click the Document Overview icon (three lines) in the top toolbar.
- Select Simply Popups (the top-level container).
- The trigger settings will appear in the sidebar.
→ Read more about selecting the parent block
Button Text Color Isn’t Changing
Problem: You changed the text color in the settings, but the button text didn’t change.
Cause: Simply Popups allows you to change text settings in two places (Parent Block and Button Block), which can sometimes conflict.
Solution:
- Select the Simply Popups Button block specifically.
- Change the color in the Styles tab of the button block.
- If that doesn’t work, check if the Parent Block has a color override applied.
License Issues (Pro)
“License key already in use”
Problem: You see an error saying your license is already in use when trying to activate.
Cause: Your license key has reached its site limit (e.g., 1 site). This often happens if you moved from a staging site to a live site.
Solution:
- Log in to your Simply Popups Account.
- Go to Licenses → Manage Sites.
- Deactivate the old URL.
- Try activating on your WordPress site again.
Warning: “Formidable Forms Lite Detected”
Problem: You see a dashboard warning about Simply Popups and Formidable Forms Lite.
Solution: This is an informational notice. Both plugins can run safely together. Simply Popups is a standalone plugin and does not require Formidable Forms, but they work well together. You can dismiss the notice.
Display & Styling Issues
Button Drop Shadow Looks Wrong
Problem: The drop shadow on my button looks square, even though my button has rounded corners.
Cause: This is a known CSS limitation in some browser versions where the shadow doesn’t perfectly track the border-radius.
Solution: Try reducing the blur radius of the shadow or using a slightly lighter shadow color to make the edge less noticeable.
Popup Won’t Close on Mobile
Problem: Users on mobile devices can’t close the popup.
Cause: The “Close Button” might be hidden, or the popup content is too tall and pushing the close button off-screen.
Solution:
- Ensure Show Close Button is toggled ON in the Parent Block settings.
- Check your popup content length. If it’s very long, ensure the user can scroll inside the modal.
Technical Errors
Console Error: “aria-hidden”
Problem: You see a console error regarding blocked aria-hidden attribute.
Cause: This is a harmless accessibility warning that occurs in some specific WordPress configurations. It does not affect the functionality of the popup or your site’s performance.
Browser Compatibility
Simply Popups is built using modern web standards and the Bootstrap framework to ensure compatibility across a wide range of devices and browsers.
Supported Browsers
Simply Popups fully supports the latest versions of all major browsers:
- Google Chrome (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
- Mozilla Firefox (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
- Apple Safari (macOS, iOS)
- Microsoft Edge (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
Mobile Devices
The popups are designed to be fully responsive and touch-friendly. They function correctly on:
- iPhone & iPad (iOS 12+)
- Android Phones & Tablets (Android 8+)
Internet Explorer Support
Simply Popups does not officially support Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) or older.
As the web moves forward, we rely on modern technologies that are not available in legacy browsers. We recommend users upgrade to Microsoft Edge or another modern browser.
JavaScript Requirement
Simply Popups relies on JavaScript to function (triggering modals, handling close actions, etc.).
- Users must have JavaScript enabled in their browser settings.
- If a user has disabled JavaScript, the popup triggers (links/buttons) may not function or may behave like standard links (doing nothing or jumping to the top of the page).
Troubleshooting Compatibility
If you notice issues on a specific browser:
- Clear Cache: Ensure you are viewing the latest version of the site.
- Check Extensions: Some browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools) can interfere with JavaScript or overlay elements.
- Update Browser: Ensure you are using the latest version of your browser.
